Low Vision Rehab

What is Low Vision?

Did you know that low vision is different from blindness? People with low vision still have some useful vision, but it can't be fully restored with regular glasses, contact lenses, medical treatment, or surgery. In fact, over 4 million Americans have low vision, and many of them are over 65 years of age.

There are several causes of low vision, including heredity, injury, disease, or aging. But no matter what the cause, Day Eye Center in Pelham, AL will help patients make the most of their remaining vision.

During a low vision examination, we'll ask you about your vision history and any difficulties you're experiencing with everyday tasks like reading, writing, and cooking. We'll also look for activities you may have stopped doing due to your vision loss. Our focus is on finding ways to help you accomplish the tasks and activities that matter most to you.

Learn to Use New Devices

Most people with low vision can become more visually independent if they make a commitment to learn how to use low vision aids and devices, as well as learn new methods to perform everyday tasks. There are many different devices available for a person with low vision, including magnifiers, telescopes, microscopes (high plus lenses for reading), enhanced lighting. Televisions and computers are often used to enlarge images and text.

Vision Rehabilitation Plan & Continuing Care

After your low vision examination, we will work together to create a personalized vision rehabilitation plan tailored to your specific needs and goals. We will provide you with the devices that best fit your lifestyle and help you achieve your objectives. Our team will provide ongoing training and support to ensure your success. We may also refer you to other helpful services and agencies.

During follow-up visits, we will assess your progress with the devices and how they are improving your daily activities, such as cooking, shopping, and reading. If you have specific goals, we can help you with computer technology and electronic reading devices. Our goal is to empower you to live independently and enjoy your hobbies and interests.
